Melody Makers of yesteryears

The Golder era of the fifties and sixties

As far as Hindi film music was concerned the 1950s and the 1960s (in fact this was true of other languages as well) were considered the golden era. It was a period of time when meaningful lyrics and melody were of prime importance and we got to see the best of everything - some of the greatest actors, very beautiful leading ladies and some great film makers and music composers.
There were so many talented artists, that listeners and movie goers were spoilt for choice. On the one hand we had the Great Greats like Anil Biswas, Naushad, Husnlal Bhagat Ram, Ghulam Mohammad, Vasanth Desai, C.Ramchandra,S.D Burman,Roshan, Ravi, Shankar Jaikishen, Salil Chaudhury, Sajjad Khan, O.P.Nayyar and others , who were all institutions in their own right and had their own distinctive style of composing music unlike the metallic noise you get to hear these days which all seem to sound the same - loud,vulgar and inspid! And then there were the second rung composers who in my opinion were no less talented than any of the above mentioned greats, but unfortunately they were not considered by the great film makers since they had a vast choice of quality composers , so had to remain satisfied composing films for B or C grade films. The films may not have made any impact but the songs are remembered and loved to this day because these composers too worked hard and gave very melodious songs for the films even if some of them never got as far as the theater. But the song albums became very popular and were heard on the radio...
In this article I am going to write about 3 such music composers namely Chitragupt, Sardar Malik and Narayan Dutta, who were not often approached by any of the top movie makers like Bimal Roy, Nasir Hussain,Guru Dutt , Raj kapoor or Mehboob Khan but nonetheless they did make an impact and once in a while did get a chance to work with some top film makers and whenever they composed music for any film, they came out with some of the most melodious and meaningful compositions .

Chitragupt ( 16t November 1917 - 14th January 1991)

Chitragupt's full name was Chitragupt Shrivastava and he was born in a village called Karmaini in the state of Bihar on 16 November, 1917. Coming from a middle class family, he studied post graduation in Economics and Journalism. He Worked as a lecturer in Patna just to please his family but since he was very interested in films and music , and unable to convince his family to accept his wishes for a career in that line, he had to run away to Bombay to pursue a career as a composer in films. Those days there were already established music composers who were all extremely talented and it was not easy for Chitragupt to make a career on his own.
He began by assisting S.N Tripathi who was known for his melodious classical compositions, and got a break in 1946 for a small time film which never got released. However, after working for a few more obscure films he was recognised as a talent to reckon with when a Swash buckler film Sindbad the Sailor starring Ranjan and Naseem Bano ( Saira Bano’s mother) was relaesed with one of the duets ‘Ada se jhoomte hue dilonko choomte hue yeh kaun ‘ sung by Mohammad Rafi and Shamshad Begum became a huge hit! That was the beginning.
Later he did work for some big names like the AVM production house which churned out many hindi films in the late fifties and sixties like Main bhi ladki hoon, Ek Raaz, Bhabhi, Ghar basake dekho, Grihasti ,Maya Bazaar etc and all these films had melodious music that are remembered to this day. Mohammad Rafi’s ‘ Chal ud jaa re panchi ‘ from Bhabi and ‘ Kush raho ahale chaman’ from the film Main chup rahhongi have become his signature tunes easily recognisable by Chiragupt’s distinctive style of composition.
He composed music for nearly 200 films, the last film being Insaaf ki Manzil in 1988 !But most of his compositions were for fantasy and stunt movies which were easily forgotten but the songs were very popular always being heard of on Vividh Bharati and Radio Ceylon by popular choice. I have always been a great fan of this composer and find his compositions very melodious, soothing and timeless.
I am listing down ten of my favorite songs composed by Chitragupt. 1, Ada se jhoomte hue ( Sndbad the sailor) 2, Do dil dhadak rahe hai aur awaz ( Insaaf) 3, Woh Chand chamka woh noor chalka( Son of Sindbad) 4, Jab se hum tum Baharon mein ( Mein Shadi karne chala) 5, Chanda se hoga woh pyara ( Mein bhi ladki hoon) 6, Chal ud jaare panchi ( Bhabhi) 7, Aaaja re mere pyar ki raahi ( Oonche log) 8, Chanda ki kirnon mein lipti hawayen ( Intezaar) 9, Chand ne kuch kaha taron ne kuch suna ( Daaka) 10, Yeh hawa yeh fiza yeh sama ( Taxi Stand)
I could pick a hundred more melodies that I have been listening to all the time ...no matter what the films were and actors were Chitragupt's compositions and melodies will remain right there at the top and he would be remembered with a lot of love and respect by all those who love old songs.

Sardar malik ( 1925 – January 2006)

Another great composer in my opinion was Sardar Malik , who is the father of Anu malik who is famous and o[popular now. But Sardar Malik had it tough and his entire career was that of struggle and hard work because he was never considered as one of the top composers those days and had to remain satisfied with what was offered to him .But the kind of amazing melodies he came up with were not to be forgotten.
Sardar Malik was born in 1925 in kapurthala in Punjab and learnt music from Ustad Allauddin Khan and was trained as a dancer under the famed Uday Shankar. Sardar Malik was a good and initially sang some punjabi songs and later moved to Mumbai where he started getting both singing and composing assignments. But whe he saw the brilliance of playback singers such as Rafi and Mukesh, he realised he could not match them and so decided to compose music instead.
He was married to the sister of Hasrat Jaipuri and since Hasrat Jaipuri was already an established lyricist, he did help him out. But his early films like Renuka (1947) and Raaz ( 1949) were not his best.. His first important film was first Laila Majnu (1953) a Nutan and Shammi Kapoor starrer in which he gave music under the direction of Great Ghulam Mohammad. Later came films like Ab e hayat ( 1955),Saaranga ( 1960), Thokar ( 1956), Bachpan ( 1963), Chor Bazar etc.... less than 30 films in all but unforgettable nevertheless !
Sardar Malik has composed two of Mohammad Rafi's most romantic compositions – Mujhe tumse muhobbat hai magar mein keh nahin saktha ( Bachpan) which incidentally was picturised on Salim who is Salman Khan’s father and Dil ki baazi jeet ke bhi haare ( Madan Manjari) picturised on none other than Ajit !
I have many favorites among Sardar Maliks compositions, however I am listing down 10 of my favorite songs 1, Mujhe tumse muhobbat hai ( Bachpan ) 2, Tere hum o sanam ( Bachpan) 3, Haan deewan ab mein ( Saaranga) 5, Ae gham e dil kya karoo ( Thokar) 6, Chalta rahe yeh caravan ( Chor bazar) 7, Koyi chand koyi taara( Taxi 555) 8, Dil ki baazi jeet ke bhi haare ( Madan Manjari) 9, Neeli neeli ankhiyon mein dhoobi dhoobi jaaon( Naag Mohini) 10, Wohi oodi oodi ghatayen hai ( Mee ghar mere bache).. A very talented but neglected composer who will remain in our hearts forever!

Narayan Dutta ( 1930- 1987 )

Narayan Datta Naik was a resident of Oroba in Goa. His was the usual story of running away from home when he was a teenager to make a career in films. But he realised that it was not easy and since those were the times when there was an abundance of talent in the film music world each one a giant in his own way and he had to learn the basics. He did learn some classical music and started his film career as a music assistant of the great composer S D Burman.
N. Datta assisted Dada Burman in a number of films in the fifties and learnt a lot from him and one can see Burman Da's stamp in some of Narayan Dutta's compositions especially yeh baharon ka sama sung by Lata Mangeshkar.. N.Datta got his first chance to compose independently for Raj Khosla's Milaap (1955), and the muisc was appreciated by audience and other composers as well.There were some really beautiful songs like 'Ye Baharon Ka Sama, picturised on both Dev Anand and Geeta Bali and 'Jaate Ho To Jaao Par Jaoge Kahan, one of Geeta Dutts very popuklar songs.The music of Milaap became extremely popular and N Datta came into the category of film industry's most eminent musicians during the early years. But after composing for films like Sadhana, Dhool Ka Phool and Dharam putra for BR Chopra he was not able to maintain the pace and began composing music for all kinds of films.
However, his melodies were appreciated very well by the audience and even smaller films ran on the strength of his music. Like for example films like Dr Shaitaana, Gyara hazzar ladkhiyan, Black cat, Rustom e baghdad, Kala Samundar, Dilli ka dada were all small budget films but were musically acclaimed...N Datta gave music for about 40 films in all and all of them were melodious and remembered to this day and were chartbusters at the time they were released.
Now I come to the part where I am going to add 10 of my own favorites songs composed by this composer.. 1, Kis Jagah jaaye ( Light house) 2, Mein jab bhi akeli hoti hoon ( Dharamputra) 3, Yeh Baharon ka sama ( Milap) 4, Yeh hawa yeh fiza yeh sama ( Mr X ) 5, Tum mujhe bhool bhi jaao ( Didi) 6, Dhoonde nazar nazar ( Dilli Ka dada) 7, Tera aana bhi dhoka hai ( Mere arman mere sapne ) 8, Jigar mein darad kaisa (Apna ghar apni kahani) 9, Mein tumhi se yeh poochthi hoon ( Black Cat) 10,Maine chand aur sitaron ki tammana ( Chandrakanta).
I have written about just 3 composers here and will continue to add more such forgotten but unforgettable composers who have made their own special contributions to the yesteryear film music..

The immortal Rafi

Mohammad Rafi is probably one of the Greatest singers
coming from the Indian sub continent.Besides being the most melodious and versatile singer, he was also a Great human being.Simple , down to earth and ever helpful.In the highly competetive world of Indian cinema, he remained totally unaffected by any glamour or Greed...Truly a respected and beloved singer of all times...

Three reasons to love Mohammad Rafi and respect his talent...

1, The most important reason being that Mohammad Rafi has the most perfect voice that any singer can ever hope to have, which is reason enough for any music lover to love Mohammad Rafi and his singing..

2, He is the most versatile singer ever...he has covered all the ragas and every aspect of Indian film music , be it Classical, light romantic, intense and emotional songs or heart wrenching melodies, religious songs or the westernized club songs ..he has never compromised in his singing, he has always given his best to each and every song that he sang...

3, Rafi is the greatest unifier that India has known..other than another towering personality in the film world Dilip kumar(Yusuf Khan).I personally feel that one can never think of Rafi as a muslim, he is Mohammad rafi, the singer who stirs souls with his singing, and who every indian looks up to..
There can be nothing greater... when a person is held in such high esteem..d respect his talent...

Mohammad Rafi at a Glance

Rafi remains immortal through his songs...

Madhumati - Bimal Roy's Eerie Romantic Classic

Movies
When Bimal Roy decided to try his hand at something different, a supernatural entertainer this time, he was scoffed at by the film Industry, coming after his earlier sensitive masterpieces like Do Bhiga Zameen (1953), Biraj Bahu (1954) and Devdas (1955). But Bimal Roy had a reason for this, none of his films made much money and he wanted to make a sure hit film with a time tested formula..
But when Bimal Roy released his latest film with such a conventional story the critics were silenced.The final film remains one of his most enduring cinematic efforts. In fact that very year Bimalda came up with another lightweight film again starring Dilip Kumar, Yahudi (1958), which incidentally was also a huge success at the box-office...And then he turned once again to films that had subjects that were close to his heart.He came up with Sujata , his most loved film, which i have reviewed earlier..

The story of Madhumati
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The story begins with Devendra(Dilip Kumar) , driving down a hilly road ,with his friend to the railway station to receive his wife and child .They meet with a minor accident, as there is a land slide, and are forced to spend the night at an old Haveli (Mansion) with a care taker .Even as he sets his eyes on the mansion, Devendra begins to feel that everything was familiar with the Place.As he goes round he spots a Portrait of a man and he begins to remember things that are unconnected to his life at present.As he delves deeper into his memory , he is able to recall flashbacks of his previous life, where the mansion had played a major role...Now he recounts his story to his friend and the caretaker of the mansion.
Anand( Dilip Kumar) as he was called in his previous birth, comes to Shyamnagar Timber Estate as a manager.As he wanders about the hill side sketching the enchanting hillsides, he meets a beautiful tribal girl Madhumati(Vyjayantimala) and falls in love with her.He wins over her father and they plan to get married.
Madhumati is being pursued by Ugranarayan(Pran) the Evil owner of the Timber estate who owns the Mansion.He watches the two lovers getting close and warns Anand not to have anything to do with the tribals. But Anand remains firm in his feelings for Madhumati, which angers Ugranarayan and he decides to take revenge on the lovers...
When he gets an opportunity, he sends Devendra away on work to a nearby city, with Devendra reluctantly, leaving after asking his aide Charandas(Johny walker) to take care of Madhumati.But Ugranarayan has planned before hand , knowing Charandas's weakness for drinks , to get him drunk and kidnap Madhumati.
My views about the film
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Madhumati has often been criticized as one of Bimal Roy's most lightweight films following the good old Hindi film formula in its choice of theme and contents. But one is amazed at Bimal Roys sheer skill as a filmmaker , that transcends above everything to give us an extremely engrossing tale of Intense love and Romance , Reincarnation and Revenge.

The film is further boosted by excellent performances alround, be it Dilip Kumar or Pran or Vyjayantimala, great cinematography, editing and above all its fantastic musical score by Composer Salil Choudhury.

Madhumati has all the right qualities of an eerie romantic film that hooks the viewer right from the beginning as Dilip Kumar takes shelter from the storm and enters the old Haveli and the atmosphere builds up straight away.

Bimal Roy is an expert at making his shots convey all the minute details.In the scene when Anand is trying to find the estate , he is on the top of a hill , he is out called by an unknown female voice not to go further as there is a sheer drop, and he looks around to see the fog slowly engulf him and hears the girl singing one of Latas most melodious haunting numbers ' Aajaa re pardesi- this scene is unforgettable, it remains in your memory forever.

The Romantic interludes between Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimala is a treat to watch.One gets the feeling that they were actually involved with each other, such is the intensity with which it has been portrayed, and those superlative songs add to make it a memorable experience.
Dilip Kumar is no doubt the greatest actor ever, so one expects nothing but brilliance from him.In this film he is all of that and more.He has given his usual brilliant touch to the film.

But clearly the focus is on Vyjayantimala as Madhumati.Her looks and whispers 'Babuji' haunts one so...She , besides looking enchantingly beautiful, has some excellent dance numbers. Vyjayantimala was a trained Bharatanatyam and Classical dancer.Dilip Kumar after seeing her perform for the song 'Chad gayo paapi Bichuaa' is supposed to have remarked that she had lightning in her foot.She is truly amazing in this film.The film showcasing both her acting as well as dancing abilities and the dizzying success of the film, took Vyjayantimala to the highest rungs of stardom.

Pran in his villanious role particularly scores heavily as the lecherous estate owner , and established his status as perhaps the greatest villain ever to grace the Indian Screen after this film.
Johny Walker, as usual adds the comic touch and gets to sing the popular Rafi song 'Jungal mein mor naacha'- He was the only comedian , for whom some of the most popular songs were composed with a lot of care by the earlier music directors, such was his impact.

Above all the Jewel in the crown, the film's music -it is a total triumph for Salil Choudhury composing perhaps his best and most popular musical score ever. When the songs of Madhumati were composed, Salil Choudhury made sure that the tweeting of birds, the flight of an eagle, the background of the tribals singing, and the patter of rain were all included in the melody to give it the right touch.The film was extensively shot in Darjeeling and amidst the foothills of Himalayas in Assam..The black and white picturisation leaves one breathless.

Each song be it the haunting 'Aaja Re Pardesi'w which gets repeated a few times in the film, the folksy ' Chad gayo paapi Bichua' or ' Zulmi se Aankh Ladi' or the heart wrenching score by Rafi ' Toote Hue Khwabon ne ' or Mukesh's ' Suhana Safar aur yeh mausam haseen' or the sweet romantic ' Ghadi Ghadi Mera Dil Dhadke' or the teasing duet ' Dil Tadap Tadap ke Keh Raha Hai Aa Bhi Jaa ' or even the comic 'Jungle Mein Mor Naacha' picturised on Johny Walker is tuned to perfection.
In fact Lata Mangeshkar counts Aaja Re Pardesi from Madhumati as among her ten best songs ever. So also Rafi's 'Toote hue Khwabon ne' is one of the greatest sad songs ever picturised.

Madhumati won nine Filmfare Awards including The Best Film, The Best Director, The Best Music, Best Playback Male (Mukesh) and Best Playback Female (Lata Mangeshkar).

Geeta Dutt and Suman Kalyanpur- Bangladeshi Natives?

Geeta Dutt and Suman Kalyanpur - Bangladeshi Natives?

I cam across an article on the net and according to this article published by Fakhruddin Ahmed ,a Rhodes Scholar and a Daily Star columnist , the late Geeta Dutt and Suman Kalyanpur, are Bangladeshi natives.....

To quote Fakhruddin Ahmed from his article "MOST Bangladeshis do not know that two famous playback singers of Hindi movies in the 1950s and 1960s, the late Geeta Dutt and Suman Kalyanpur, are Bangladeshi natives. Geeta Dutt (Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhuri) was born into a rich Zamindar family in Faridpur on November 23, 1930 and stayed there until 1942. Suman Kalyanpur (Suman Hemadey) was born in Dhaka on January 28, 1937 and lived there until 1943..

Who can forget Geeta's immortal Bengali songs, Tumi Je Amar ("Harano Shur,"1958), Ei Shundar Shwarnali Shandhyay ("Hospital," 1960) and Nishi Raat Baka Chand Akashey. Geeta could sing all types of songs, "soft, snappy, teasing, sad," seductive or western. Geeta developed her talents under the tutelage of Sachin Dev Burman and O. P. Nayyar. Her famous Hindi songs include: Mera Sundar Swapna Beet Gaya, ("Do Bhai," 1947), Babuji Dhire Chalna, ("Aar Paar," 1954), Ae Dil Mujhe Bata De, ("Bhai Bhai," 1956) and Aaj sajan mohe ang lagalo ("Pyasaa," 1957). Geeta's disastrous marriage with the director of "Pyasaa," Guru Dutt, who was in love with Waheeda Rahman, destroyed them both. Guru Dutt committed suicide in 1964; Geeta died of liver cirrhosis on July 20, 1972, at the age of 41!

Although Lataji was a fan of Geeta Dutt, that was not the case with Suman Kalyanpur. The reasons were many . First of all , Suman's voice sounded very similar to Lata Mangeshkar's,so that people confused the two. More important, in the early 1960s, Lata had a falling-out with singer Mohammad Rafi. As the two dominant playback singers, Lata wanted Rafi to back her demand that if a movie was a box office hit because of its songs, the singers should get a percentage. Rafi Saab took the opposite view: once a singer is paid for a song, he has no further claim. (Clearly, Lata was right.) Lata and Rafi Saab stopped talking, and singing duets.

When it came to choosing between Lataji and Rafi Saab, in those days the music directors preferred Rafi Saab. Because Geeta was running into marital and alcohol problems, up and coming Asha Bhonsle benefited; but the real beneficiary was Suman, because she sounded like Lataji. Music directors successfully substituted Suman for Lataji without missing a beat.
Suman sang several memorable duets with Rafi Saab: Parbaton Ke Petron Par, ("Shagun," 1964), classical Ajahunaa Aaye Baalaama, ("Sanjh Aur Saveera," 1964) Aaj Kaal Tere Mere ('Brahmachari," 1968). Other famous Suman Hindi songs include: Na Tum Hamen Jano, ("Baat Ek Raat Ki," 1962), Mere Mehboob Na Ja ("Noor Mahal," 1965) and Sharaabi Sharaabi, ("Noor Jehan," 1967). Thrice, she won the prestigious Sur Sringar Samsad award for the best classical song in a Hindi movie. Suman's Bengali hits include, Tomar Akash Theke, Mone Karo Ami Nei, and Shudhu Swapno Niye.

Some believe that Lataji never forgave Suman, believing that her rift with Rafi Saab would have ended sooner had Suman not been picking up the slack. When the rift finally ended four years later, through the mediation of actress Nargis and music director S. D. Burman (who had his own run-in with Lataji in 1958), reticent and shy Suman's sojourn as an elite singer was effectively over."

Coming to this observation, I can well believe that, Geeta dutt might have had her origins in Bhangla Desh which was afterall a part of Greater Bengal before its independence as late as the seventies..
But, Suman Kalyanpur comes from a Saraswat Brahmin family from Karnataka - Maharashtra border. Her father was in services at Dhaka and that's how she spent her early years there. She is Suman hemmadi, not Suman hemadey as the author claims..

However the rest of the article and observations make interesting reading...

Suman Kalyanpur - Voice of Sweetness

Suman Kalyanpur remains one of the best-loved voices of Hindi and Marathi songs — almost 25 years after she stopped singing full-time.
Her career, debatably, was believed to have been restricted by the awesome presence of the Mangeshkar sisters on the scene. Was that ever a pressure factor?

She says “The Mangeshkars were well-established much before I came on the scene. I was still able to carve out a niche for myself. If there had been any such pressure, wouldn’t I have dropped out at the outset?”

What does she feel about the remixes era?

“I think they are mostly made by people who don’t like old songs. Or don’t understand them. Or aren’t getting any good new tunes. Only they can explain why they do it. I feel they must at least stop adding those raunchy music videos. It’s embarrassing to watch them on TV at home with children watching. The makers should act more responsibly.”

Suman Kalyanpur has sung many many extremely melodious songs for Hindi films

Mohammad Rafi - A legend of legends

I still remember the kind of magic that was created when I listened to Rafi singing 'Khoya khoya chand' 'Nigahe na phero', Baar baar dekho hazaar baar dekho' 'Salaamat raho'... felt that
Rafi had God's own voice which can never be equaled let alone surpassed...!

He is considered to be the Best singer of all times. His name ranks first and foremost as long as music is discussed by all hindi music lovers.The kind of fan following Rafi has, is seen to be believed, it is spread across nations and continents . In fact, many a critic has remarked that Rafi’s fan following and adoration has grown by leaps and bounds after his death. Rafi has been a single great unifier of people across the continents, he has united people like no other person has.Rafi the singer has no religion, he is himself, adored and respected for the magic he weaved with his voice and songs !

"In the age of nasal singers, the heart longs to listen to Mohammad Rafi once again.His recordings now remain the only source of solace.."

It is not possible to choose any favorites among his songs , because there are so many that come to ones mind , each one better than the other,each more melodious than the other..words fail while talking about this god like person , it is said that Rafi was a teetotaler, a religious and extremely simple and humble person.;A great singer and greater human being..unsurpassed !
