If one were a keen observer there is any amount of drama in our day today life and dealings with various people..;some of them become a learning experience for us, some may leave behind some
unpleasant experience..;while some other experiences enrich our lives because they leave an impact on our lives and some other experiences make us laugh ..
I was out shopping the other day and realised that i had run out of currency on my cell phone( for some reason i still maintain a rechargeable account), stopped by a small shop selling everything under the sun including recharge cards for almost all cell phone companies. The shop was being managed by a very formidable looking lady, the no nonsense type, a typical kannada speaking Bangalorean who detested everything that is not related to kannada and karnataka.A young couple came in and the girl asked for cigarettes and later the two of them started smoking standing against their vehicle and our lady of the shop was in a real state..;"What does she think of coming here (bangalore) and smoking? can't she do it in her place ? she is spoiling that boy as well!..in the mean time i came out of the shop and as i passed the young couple i could hear them conversing in a mixtue of kannada and english as most local youngsters do.This set me thinking on various issues involved..
First of all this unnecessary and unwanted prejudice against outsiders which sometime make us
wear blinkers , wherein it is automatically presumed that all negative influences come from outside..;and secondly..
I am no prude but my own feeling about smoking is very negative be it a man or woman, i feel that other than few momentary pleasure?? there is hardly anything achieved by smoking, except contact cancer or lung disease..but i feel that the youngsters today get into these habits for kicks in the first place and then get hooked on to it, there is absolutely no thought going into this whole exercise. Now one cannot hold them wholly responsible as, some of them are barely in their teens and are hardly mature enough to analyse their actions and its aftereffects. So where does all this lead? And how does one go about making the youngsters more aware?
This makes us all think..actually I was going to write on this anyway...as you said, though we werent prudes..what we are concerned about is the way they go about it..so blatantly. For the life of me, i never could tough a cigarette..thanks to the mithaiwala...who used to make those cigarette candies..which I used to chew and eat, after enough fancying.. :-) That satiated my desire..and now for me it all looks so childish..
ReplyDeleteexperimenting is natural at that stage, but at the same time i feel that they should be made aware of the alround adverse effects smoking can have on one's own health and other's health too...
